A Tour About Firefighting in the 1800s
Before professional firemen existed in Mobile, volunteer fire companies protected the city from the ravages of fire. This tour takes our guests to 19th century fire halls hidden in plain sight around downtown. Along the way, we will discuss the dangers these firemen faced, the intense competition among rival companies, as well as the important connections between Mardi Gras and fire halls. This tour covers much of the historic shopping and restaurant district on the Dauphin and St. Francis corridor. Along the way we’ll form a bucket brigade like they used in volunteer firefighting.
